Boyd bows out of US Open

The 23-year-old from Middleton Cheney had said beforehand that the Pebble Beach course would be his toughest test in his golfing career - and so it proved.

Boyd - like many of the world's top players - struggled to cope with the demands of the links baby Cross Pendants course.

He had faced an uphill struggle after carding seven-under par 78 in the first round and improved slightly to record 75 in the second, putting him 11 over and missing the cut by four strokes.

Boyd had not managed a single birdie on Thursday but had two in the first six holes in Friday's second round to take him to five over and in a good position to make it through to the weekend.

Further bogeys followed on the 13th, 14th and 16th to end his hopes of making the cut.

After recording a double bogey seven at the 18th in the first round, Boyd hit a birdie four on the last to ensure his first US Open ended on a high.
