North Yorkshire Police has referred the death of William Mark Rimmington, who was arrested on suspicion of drink driving earlier this month, to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The force is already facing an IPCC investigation over claims senior officers helped relatives during a recruitment exercise.

Another probe, into claims a disc containing allegedly inappropriate material was found in a computer used by deputy chief constable Adam Briggs, is also ongoing.

The latest investigation was launched when 43-year-old Mr Rimmington, from Leeds, died after suffering a bleed on his brain.

He was arrested near the Broadings campsite, in Whitby, on Saturday, May 15.

Officers who stopped the vehicle he was driving noticed he had a number of facial injuries.

His condition deteriorated while in custody and he was taken to hospital, where he died on Wednesday.

The force said the death was voluntarily referred to the IPCC in the interests of "openness and transparency".

IPCC commissioner Nicholas Long said: "This investigation will examine Mr Rimmington's arrest and period in custody to determine whether he was afforded the appropriate level of care.

"My thoughts are with his family and friends."

A criminal investigation into how the injuries were sustained is also under way.

A 39-year-old man from Leeds has been charged with causing Christian Dior Replica Handbags grievous bodily harm with intent.

He was remanded in custody following an appearance before magistrates on May 19.

Detective Chief Inspector Nigel Costello, who is leading the criminal investigation, said: "It is vital that the full circumstances surrounding the alleged assault are determined, particularly following the sad news that Mr Rimmington passed away.

"I am appealing for people who were staying at the campsite on May 14 or 15 to come forward.

"Even the smallest piece of information could be crucial."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0845-60-60-24- 7 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800555-111.

The IPCC has said it will issue an update on the earlier investigations on Wednesday.
