Devon selectors struggle to sc

Devon's team management has had a difficult week preparing a side for the Minor Counties Championship game against Wales at Abergavenny.

It can be easy to forget that three-day cricket takes a toll on amateur players, who have to give up holiday time to turn out. Six lots of Mondays and Tuesdays for those who get Sundays off anyway is still 12 days out of the holiday calendar.

Devon would have liked North Devon left-hander Neil Bettis to play, but he can't take time off just like that without dipping into his vacation time.

Teachers and students are stuck in the classroom for a few more weeks, which has also limited Devon's options.

Openers Chris Mole, Seb Benton and Matt Thompson, along with all- rounder Lewis Gregory, are victims of the scholastic calendar.

Devon have made the best of what they already had by retaining Dan Bowser to open, moving Bob Dawson up from four to partner him, and juggling around with the middle order.

Given all the disruption in the side, it is perhaps surprising relica rolex that Devon have dropped left-arm spinner Chris Metters, especially as he was the leading bowler in all Minor Counties Cricket last season.

"It is a wake-up call," said Devon captain Neil Hancock.

"We are trying to create a more professional set up in Devon cricket and Chris has to buy into that.

Devon team managers have become frustrated by Metters' sometimes casual approach to his cricket - and leaving him out is seen as the best way of giving him a short, sharp shock.

"If Chris harbours ambitions of playing First Class cricket, and I know that he does, then he needs to get into some better habits now."

Metters, who won't be 20 until September, said he was shocked to be left out of the side but had taken on board the criticisms levied at him.

"Playing for Devon is important to me and I am determined to play my way back into the side as soon as I can," said Metters. "It has been pointed out to me where I have gone wrong and I have written to the county officials apologising and saying what I intend to do to put it right. I hope it isn't too long before I am back in the side again."

With Metters out for this match, the selectors have turned to Bradninch's Gary Chappell as their left-arm spin option.

Chappell is the form player in the Devon League Premier Division this season with 20 wickets already but has found his progress blocked by Metters until now."

Devon opened the season with a rain-ruined draw against Cornwall at Torquay, but were well on top for most of the play that took place.

Hancock is looking to turn the positives from the Cornwall game into a win over Wales.

"We dominated most of the game apart from an hour at each end of the first day," said Hancock. "If we play the same sort of cricket, but without the rain this time, then Wales could be our first win of the season in three-day cricket."
